Nyerere National Park, the renamed and partially redesignated former Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa, with the Rufiji River running through varied habitat supporting elephant, hippo, and crocodile in large numbers.
Drive through woodland and along the Rufiji River in search of elephant, buffalo, and one of the better remaining populations of African wild dog, alongside the hippo and crocodile that gather along the riverbanks. The park’s sheer size and relatively low visitor numbers give it a genuinely remote feel.
Because of its scale, Nyerere is generally explored over a multi-day stay, combining game drives with the boat safaris the river makes possible.
