the African continent, who invisibly reside deep into the rocky mountains of north Tanzania and on the bright shores of Lake Eyasi. They are one of the few remaining hunter-gatherers in the world, and they continue living a lot like their fore fathers who lived thousands of years ago.

To those who want more than scenic safari and wildlife experiences, a trip to the Hadzabe will provide something exceedingly uncommon to the rest of the world a glimpse into the primitive way of life of humanity. We think that it is not only a cultural experience at Σαφάρι με Φροντισμένη Άγρια Ζωή, but the time travel, in which the simplicity, survival and closeness to nature shared a story even older than civilization itself.

Who Are the Hadzabe?

Hadza (or the Hadzabe) people are an ethnic minority of slightly less than 1,500 people that inhabits the area of the lake Eyasi, in northern Tanzania. Their language, the Hadzane, is unlike any other language in that it is a unique tongue, characterized by its peculiar clicks and sounds like the San Bushmen of southern Africa.

The Hadzabe have defied the adoption of modern agriculture or pastoralists like their neighbors because they have preserved their ancient culture of being nomadic hunters and gathers. They are all subsistence hunters; they hunt using hand-made bows and arrows, they collect fruits, tubers, honey and wild berries. Nature dictates the course of each day, and their life cycle is recreated with each season.

Their houses are rudimentary and in many cases shanty structures out of branches and grass. Their belongings are minimal and their movement is in tune with nature always according to the pattern of the wild animals and the availability of resources.

This strong attachment to the land has also resulted in the Hadzabe being masters of survival, and the narrators of the wild- keepers of an ancient wisdom that has really been lost in the contemporary world.

A Way of Life Shaped by Nature

The Hadzabe is to be known is coexistence. They live a life of respect to nature and being at peace with the environment. Men hunt small animals like birds, baboons and antelopes all day long using rudimentary bow made of local trees and arrows endowed with poisons made of local plants. The women and children collect roots of edibles, wild fruits and honey and move silently and most effectively through the bush with a great amount of skill and knowledge.

Among the Hadzabe there are no written regulations–no chiefs, no riches and no land. Everything is shared. The food in the forest is shared evenly and decisions are made through consultation and debate. This social way of life represents their value of togetherness, equality and peace.

Their food is completely organic and this is determined by nature. More specially, Honey is an essential part of their culture, not just because it is a source of food, but also because it serves as a connection between people and the forest. The Hadzabe are also known to collaborate with honeyguide birds which guide them to concealed beehives in return of leftover wax and larvae. It is a bond that represents the strong trust between man and wildlife which is the character of a Hadzabe life.

Convention, Music and Story-telling.

Evenings of a camp of Hadzabes are full of good humor, of laughing and of telling stories. Hunters also share the adventures of the day around the fire as the elders impart myths and lessons of the forebears. Their music, usually supported by rhythmic applause and dancing, glorifies the unity of nature, life and love.

Music does not only entertain but a form of relating generations and showing appreciation to what land offers. What makes these moments so simple is the voices, which are lifted up to the sky under a covering of stars, is the human sense of existence without modernity.

Problems of the Contemporary World.

The Hadzabe are experiencing pressure on their ancestral territories as Tanzania develops and the modernity is on the rise. Farming and cattle grazing have also encroached on their hunting areas, and has also changed their natural resource accessibility.

Despite these, the Hadzabe are still strong. The government and conservation organizations have made efforts to preserve some of their land which has enabled them to live their own lifestyles as they interact with the world in their own terms.

We strongly believe in ethical and respectful tourism within the Nurtured Wildlife Safaris. By using our guided cultural tours to visit the Hadzabe, you are helping the community to initiate community-driven projects in which the tribe will benefit and the culture will be preserved to be passed to the future generations.

A Trip to the Origins of Mankind.

One can not visit the Hadzabe community and get away without a comparable experience in Tanzania. You go with them in their day-to-day activity, and you know how to make the fire using sticks, how to shoot arrows accurately, and what plants to eat, which most modern people would not have recognized as edible. Each thing we do shows intelligence and adaptation that has been perfected over several thousand years.

The most notable thing about them is not their simplicity but wisdom. The Hadzabe know more than the modern world does: how to live in the present, how to value community, and how to get peace in the natural cycling of life.

Travelling with Σαφάρι με Φροντισμένη Άγρια Ζωή you do not only observe, you also participate in a respectful manner, you listen and learn as you have a chance to talk to the people who occupy one of the oldest traditions of humanity. Their independence is supported by your visit and you have a life-altering view of what it is really like to live near nature.

The Spiritual Connection

The Hadzabe, even though they do not adhere to a structured religion, believe in having a strong religious attachment to the natural world. Their church is the forest and everything in the forest has a meaning; every animal, tree and mountain. Death and life are viewed as a cycle of eternity and gratitude is not expressed in rituals but in the actions.

This silent spirituality will appeal to the travelers who want to feel the authenticity and simplicity. There is no ceremony but there is a realization of life as a gift- something that needs to be respected, shared, and lived to full.

Excursion to the Hadzabe by Nurtured Wildlife Safaris.

It is to enter the dawn of man to meet the Hadzabe. Their laughter, strength and connection with nature are reminding us of our inner self.

Στο Σαφάρι με Φροντισμένη Άγρια Ζωή, we assume that traveling together may unite people and retain cultures.
