Chole Island Visit

Chole Island, a short boat ride from Mafia Island, is home to the atmospheric ruins of a 19th-century trading settlement, slowly being reclaimed by surrounding forest.

What to Expect

Walk through the ruins of old German and Arab-era buildings, now overgrown with trees and vines, learning about the island’s history as a trading post before Mafia eclipsed it in importance. The island today is also a small fruit bat sanctuary, with the chance to spot them roosting in the trees.
